Apabila kita meneliti dari kebudayaan “SILSILAH” yang di anut oleh berbagai macam bangsa dan golongan, dan secara khusus bangsa israel, maka kita dapat melihat bahwa yang masuk dalam daftar silsilah, atau yang dianggap sebagai pelanjut keturunan selalu adalah “laki-laki”… demikian juga dengan daftar silsilah dari matius 1 diatas. Yang dianggap sebagai keturunan adalah mereka yang terlahir dari perkawinan yang sah, dan dari benih pria sebagai suami. Dari silsilah tersebut, nama terakhir yang disebut sebelum Yesus adalah Yusuf.
